What is SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)?

The Initiation () is a protocol for controlling a communication between two or more participants. It is specified in RFC 3261. The protocol is modeled on the Hypertext Transfer Protocol and is an open, well-extensible standard that is commonly used for example in the IP telephony.

SIP is used to negotiate the communication itself. The actual data exchange is realized via separate protocols. Often this is the Session Description Protocol (, RFC 4566) embedded in SIP, to negotiate details on the video and/or audio transmission. Here, the possibilities of the communication partners are taken into account, i.e. which codecs (transfer methods) they can support and with what protocol they want to transmit the data.

Was ist SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)?

Das Initiation () ist ein zur Steuerung einer Kommunikationssitzung zwischen zwei und mehr Teilnehmern.

Es ist in RFC 3261 spezifiziert.

Das Protokoll lehnt sich an das Hypertext Transfer Protocol an und bildet einen offenen, gut erweiterbaren Standard, der zum Beispiel in der IP-Telefonie häufig verwandt wird.

SIP dient dazu, die Kommunikation selbst auszuhandeln.

Der eigentliche Datenaustausch wird über separate Protokolle realisiert. Oft wird dazu das Session Description Protocol (, RFC 4566) in SIP eingebettet, um Details zur der Video- und/oder Audio-Übertragung auszuhandeln.

Hier teilen sich die Kommunikationspartner mit, welche Codecs (Übertragungsmethoden) sie unterstützen können und mit welchem Protokoll sie die Daten übermitteln möchten.

SIP bietet Flexibilität.
