What is a MAC-address?
A MAC (Media Access Control) address identifies a network adapter, such as the Ethernet card in your computer.
The number is 48 bits or 64 bits long and is in hexadecimal notation, represented byte for byte. The first 24 bit carry a description of the manufacturer, the other 24 bits or 40 bits carry a manufacturer-numbering (or serial). Its usage is described in RFC 5342.

Eine MAC (Media Access Control) Adresse identifiziert einen Netzwerkadapter, etwa die Ethernetkarte in Ihrem Rechner.
Die Nummer ist 48 Bit oder 64 Bit lang und wird in hexadezimaler Schreibweise, Byte für Byte dargestellt. Dabei beschreiben die ersten 24 Bit eine den Hersteller, die andere 24 Bit bzw. 40 Bit dienen der Nummerierung nach Herstellerwunsch.
