Computers in a network vary in their IP-adresses. Today IP-Adresses are four Numbers long, in the future it will be sixteen numbers.
It is immediately clear, that we are not used to remember such identifications or use them regularly. After all our own identification is just a few words long („firstname/s lastname“). Objects, we use, and places, we remain, are named things too.
The hostname is just the name of a machine, that is more human-friendly than the IP-Address. IP-Address and hostname are equivalent and can be used synonymously:
> https://74.125.127.100 > https://google.com
The conversion (or translation) of an IP-Address to a hostname and back is done by the DNS (Domain Name Service).
To reduce the number of requests to the DNS, computer and router remember these addresses (they „cache“ them) and refresh them just from time to time.
See your hostname.
